ZZ Gundam is Freaking Good If You Ask Me……

Gundam Team. YAY. The first one in the metaseries.

Now, now this news may be blasphemy to north american audiences and fans in general; but I’ll take my chances. ZZ Gundam or Double Zeta Gundam is to most fans the worst series ever. How so? It flat out sucked and the story could not be as coherent as my apartment’s roof that is held together by super glue. Although hard to follow like any other shows, it has it’s ups and downs. Well…. mostly downs; but that’s what sold me into watching and finishing this torture. It’s ironic.

Calling “watching Double Zeta” torture is quite an understatement actually. This was horrifying, unbearable, unwatchable. I mean 70’s porn flicks with John Holmes are more interesting than this. Just as I try to put this one away, I somehow keep on coming back to it. It’s episodic content/s is/are out of place most of the time, each time losing continuity. Putting me to sleep at times because I just can’t keep up. I am starting to think I am slightly retarded, but I highly doubt that. Maybe a little. I blame this show for dumbing me down.

While we are on the subject of dumbing down. That is the real bread and butter of the series. Everything serious about our UBER-realistic metaseries was thrown out of the window. Instead we are given 3 Stooges in space. The humor in this series is everywhere from Shinta and Qum to Judau to Captain Noah. It is not short of laughs. Even unintentional ones are here and there. They even made the Nazis-wannabe Zeon, is now Neo-Zeon compose of clowns with pink robots and a rose bearing faggot.

Mashymere is simply the most idiotic character that I have ever seen. He is just wrong in many levels. His love for lady Haman and his appreciation of roses is just unbearable. Unfortunately he is a character I enjoyed watching, including Glemy Toto, and Chara Soon. Those two are super stupid and quirky but they are interesting enough to keep me watching.

From this point on;  I am pretty much just waiting for the next stupid scenario these characters are put in.

This post may sound a little condescending, but I do not intend to put down ZZ fans. The fact is that I am a ZZ fan is what makes this brutally honest review/overview harder to write. Considering there is nothing to write about other than how ridiculous Tomino tried to mix slap-stick comedy and drama in one package, and ultimately FAIL! The idea isn’t far-fetched, it’s just the execution isn’t done properly. One of those cases where the premise and initial idea is good but the delivery is BAD.

Many may wonder if the show is really that BAD. I am gonna tell you now. If you can bear and watch, let alone invest some minutes and get through the first 20 episodes. You will find this series enjoyable. Watching episode 20 and beyond is like watching Zeta Gundam again. Where there’s an even more serious tone to the scenes and the humor turned from slap-stick to dark humor. The second half of the series is full of tragedies. It is also the starting point of the character developments. Every single one found a reason to fight, live, care. Buttfuckers Beecha and Mondo even started to actually take shit seriously.

Not only that, the villains also started to act the way we expected them to. EVIL. Especially Glemy Toto. Sure he looks like a teenager but he is an evil teenager. IN a not emo-way. Mashymere is more rugged and Chara Soon is still sensual as usual. Add on a shit load of Quebley Mk II and Haman Karn as the evil genius. We get a darker, twisted, more serious second half of the season.

That really is the saving grace of this abomination, but the terrible start and a non existent plot in the beginning is what hinders me from giving this show a 1.5 thumbs out of 2. Fortunately I enjoyed the show and the killer action scenes and character development in the end with some surprises made me give this show a 1 out of 2.

Surely you are not sold on investing your time on this sequel but if you invest enough you will come to love it. Just don’t expect something to blow your mind. Like I said before this is slapstick comedy with robots and that’s what it’s known for. Take it for what it is. It was certainly refreshing to see a show where the serious tone takes a back seat to humor. This is a must see to casual and hardcore viewers.

Beware of Puru.
