Unicorns Are Not For Gays Anymore

24 02 2010

I ain't for gays anymore!

It’s been years since I last posted something meaningful. Here I am back again trying to give you a brutally-honest review of the latest Gundam OVA; Gundam Unicorn: Day of the Unicorn. Now let’s begin:

This unicorn looks gay to you?

The meta-series goes back to its roots with the usage of the most historical of all timelines, the Universal Century. The show is set 3 years after the events of Char’s Counterattack. A new era was brought upon after an attempt to drop the Zeon space colony AXIS. Char thought he could pull it off, but he couldn’t. HAHA. OK’ now we are gonna begin with the how the movie started because it was quite an intriguing prelude.

The very beginning of the century, a  new PM of space colonies has been appointed and he didn’t last long with his term. Reminded of Canadian PM Kim Campbell’s term. LOL. That didn’t last long. Now we have a colony that was blown up and many civilians dead. Now where is Sunrise going with this? To be honest I don’t fucking know. It’s quite a big mystery what they try to portray in this OVA.

Jonny Gon's assisticant PONGO!

Terms such as Laplace Box floats in the show and it is quite fascinating how a box could keep me glued to my seat/bed for hours re-watching this episode. I haven’t read any of the novels; hence the terminologies are new to me. At the same time it didn’t feel out of place as the initial plot is hovering above our heads the whole time. The plot on this one is pretty simple.

Little girl getting away and her babysitters have to chase her down. How it unfolded was quite fun. The movie is pretty much the group called Sleeves playing hide and seek against Londo Bell, at the same time chasing down Audrey Burne. The novelist must be a Audrey Hepburn fan. Unfortunately this female lead is not BODACIOUS.

Like any other Gundam series set in the UC universe, this one has a delinquent piloting the featured suit. Banagher, they pronounce it  like BA-NA-JEE. Sounded familiar so I looked into my brain and I came up with the girl Matijee from Bend It Like Beckham. LOL. Jokes aside, he is not a bad lead as he really sets himself apart from the rest. He was presented more humanly than his other counterparts. You know the kid once he starts talking and you get to see his initial motives and what drives/drove him to make such decisions. Most people will find him annoying due to the genericness, but to me he is quite an enjoyable character to watch.

I believe he's praying.....

As the show progresses we get to see more of the suits and the initial characters that will play a big role in the story’s progression to EPICNESS!! Marida Cruz is one of them, she stands out to me for some reason. The reason is…. she reminds me of PONGO from that MAD TV skit. Jokes aside, this one has very good initial characters. They may not be developed but they are there and they look interesting enough to engage both hardcore and casual viewers. Except for that Kling-on named Micott, she’s annoying as hell.

The music on this one is exceptional. One of the best scores this season, they manage to find a fitting music to all the major scenes. Like the battle with Kshatriya. Heck even the meeting between people has some kind of ear engaging elements to it. It’s quite fascinating how they manage to keep the quality so high. From the background noise to VO, it’s great all around.

Now as we move away from sound we talk about this thing called animation. Or people call eye-gouging extravaganza. Well it’s not bad. Well it’s freaking amazing! From start to finish the quality of the artwork never faltered and every single second will get you glued to the monitor. Eventually having seizures from staring too much. The design of the characters is great; from the proportions to the realistic hair color. I’ve yet to see a girl with pink hair on this one. Well… dark orange is considered brunette right? Hair color aside, the real gem on this one are the MS. Oh shit it’s a typical Gundam affair trying to brainwash me to buy more model kits. DAMN YOU BANDAI AND YOUR AWESOME LOOKING SHOWS WITH AWESOME LOOKING TOYS!!!!! To say great to say the least isn’t really justifying the models. Lemme elaborate..

When Bandai used a different marketing campaign and went on with the Alternate Universes. Their designs became somewhat stagnant over time looking all the same. This was proven by watching Gundam Seed Destiny where every single Gundam awfully looked like twins, ugly twins. Now they go back to UC and the suits had a more realistic feel to them. Except Kshatriya which outperforms everyone considering it’s size.

To conclude this long post. I must say I am impressed on how this show turned out to be. It was an art orgy from beginning to the end with an engaging story. At the same time keeping things interesting as they try to tap the very fabric that created the century itself. I give this show 1.5 thumbs up as we need more GUNDAM. Freaking making me wait 5 months for another one.
